This is a story of how we transformed a lovely client’s living room for Christmas, even though all her furniture didn’t come in time. Our client’s Federation home had jarrah floorboards and a Hamptons style kitchen and she wanted to add colour but just wasn’t sure which colours to add…
The space was currently boxed in by bulky leather recliners and a heavy TV unit. The client had already ordered some sofas but they would take 6 months to arrive so we had to plan the rest of the room around them. I was able to use their measurements to draw up a furniture plan and visit a trade showroom with the client to look at a wide range of furniture and decor from different suppliers. This is a great feature of shopping with a designer, it’s so much easier to get the creative juices flowing without crowds and hovering salespeople!
With my contacts we were able to lend samples to bring home to see what they looked like in the house and I drew up furniture to show how different pieces would fit together. As a result we were able to pull together and electic scheme with pieces from different suppliers, avoiding the ‘matching set’ look of big box furniture stores.
We chose a colour scheme of nuetrals, royal blue and deep greens. Also some pops of brass in the furniture frames. The client loves the look so much she is planning her Dining Room to be decorated in similar tones next year. Blending in with the lovely courtyard outlook, the colour scheme also add new life to the jarrah floorboards and white panelled kitchen cabinetry.
While the new TV unit is yet to come, I showed the client how to pull potted plants and scatter cushions in the chosen colour tones to complement the new look and bring the outside in. Changing up the levels by introducing side tables, nesting tables and floor lamps also adds movement and interest to the setting of a living room, especially in an open space.
The clients are thrilled with their new space which they’ll enjoy for Christmas, while hopefully the rest of their furniture will arrive in the new year!
