With the lockdown making this week a little dull for everyone in Western Australia, I’m sharing a project with you in it’s unfinished state. I think we could all use some gorgeousness!
It’s my first time using saturated colour on the walls and I am thrilled to have an adventurous client with more than a dash of decorating style himself.
I wanted it to be right though. So I went through a lot of preparation for each of the three rooms…..
I prepared little watercolour sketches showing the painted walls and new curtains. I do love this way of presenting soft furnishings - it conveys a feeling that a 3D render doesn’t do. I also prepared A4 samples of paint colours by buying sample pots to prepare brushouts which the client could then place in the rooms to see the colour as the light moved throught the day.
The James Dunlop Vienna range of velvet has jewel like tones
For the curtains, I visited the beautiful showrooms of James Dunlop and Decor Design Centre in Perth with my client. We chose velvet with a self pattern that shifted under the light for the rooms lived in in the evening and a gold Silk Linen from De La Cuona for the Reception room that faces the street. Named Spun Silk, it drapes like a princesses’ ballgown.
Armchairs upholstered in Leopardo Sapphire by Catherine Martin
Vintage armchairs bought at an hotel auction were fitted with new webbing and padding and upholstered in a leopard print - in Sapphire, what else - that had a sleek sheen.
The abundance of pigments in Porter’s Paints make their Nude just the right shade of not-too-pink.
It took many swatches before we found the right shade of not-too-pink. The richness of the 100 year old jarrah used in the floors and skirting panels is the perfect foil. The ceiling and cornices details are picked out in Dulux Natural White.
Walls - Dulux Cape Lee Curtains - James Dunlop Vienna Tanzanite Brass Reeded Track by Perth Window Decor
The finished den walls and curtains - teals are a tricky colour group to match, being a combination of so many different blues and greens. But here the drapes and walls combine to make a wonderfully cosy room for evening viewing or daytime peace and quiet.
